I used to live on Guam (GU).  I never understood how the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (capital is located on Saipan) got the abbreviation: MP. Maybe the P stands for Pacific.

Today's trivia: The abbreviation for Ohio was simply "O." Check any old almanac or school dictionary if you don't believe that.

That'd work, except that I'm always forgetting that Arkansas is AR, thinking that it's AS instead (since many of the other states use first and last letters, like CT, GA, HI, KS, KY, LA, ME, VT). That doesn't help with Alaska.

I have trouble remembering that AK is the abbreviation for Alaska and not Arkansas (AR).
