High doses of MSG (as in Chinese soups) give members of my family migraines.

Wasn't the whole MSG thing kinda overdone? Or was there real science behind the claims?

Yes, MSG goes by many names. You can find a big list of them here: http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html

Known as Aji-No-Moto in Asia. The company is based in Japan but it's popular all over Asia and other parts of the world. Andy Williams went to Japan to do a big radio and TV promo some 30-40 years ago.

That Food Detectives show was inaccurate, because they claimed that half of the diners did not eat any (added) MSG -- but other common ingredients in Chinese food, such as soy sauce, contain MSG created as a byproduct of fermentation and/or processing. So, the people who were complaining of symptoms, actually ate MSG.

Food Network once ran a show called Food Detectives hosted bt Ted Allen that showed that 'Chinese Restaurant Syndrome' is likely a myth, based on the power of suggestion. The Scientist on the show says science has known it was a myth for years but no one believes them.
