This is a modern barrel! I remember the real, open topped, hand-made wooden barrels with two or three thick semi-rusted metal bands around the barrel holding the wood in place in the small neighborhood grocery store. There were two: one barrel was for the sour pickles (the best), the other for semi-sour ones (forget what they were called). A nickel for a pickle. You either reached your hand in the brine (no one cared) to take up one of your choice or used a wooden scoop for several. The guy wrapped them in wax paper and then in a paper bag for you to carry home. Man, those were the best pickles in the world. Talking the late forties, 50's...

Back in the 50's & 60's, the deli near our house had a pickle barrel and was filled with the best pickles I've ever tasted.

I don't think I'm old enough to remember these, but the neighborhood grocer had a big jar of pickles on the meat counter. That was when dill pickles tasted like dill, not vinegar. I cannot find a commercially made dill pickle today that doesn't taste like vinegar, but then I was spoiled by my mother's home-made pickles. They were the best!
