IOfferMyBentNickel - The problem is that these kids now don't have a healthy immune system from be brought up in "sterile bubble"...pampered and protected from everything. We drank out of garden hoses that was laying on the ground all day/week and never thought about sterilizing the end first before drinking. surprised

I consumed "peanut butter and jam sandwiches" for years and when I left home to pursue my "adult life journey" I could not bear to even look at a jar of peanut butter in the store. For a while anyway. But, as a member stated, never a problem with "peanut allergies."
I wonder what was the root cause of all these allergies anyway? Peanut butter was held up as the culprit, but, I wonder if it was something else?

And no peanut allergies. At my school they gave you a peanut butter sandwich if you forgot your lunch; bring 4 cents tomorrow please. One kid had to eat one after he chomped up yellow crayons "to clean his teeth" Now kids would die if they smelled peanut butter.

"We didn't have attention deficits, hyperactivity disorders, or

Speaking of lobotomies..."I'd rather haver a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy." I'm sue the originator of that phrase was thinking of 'hootch' not prune juice!!!

Besides the "retards, morons, idiots, and cretins" labels, there was also the "day-dreamers". Once I learned something I was bored until we went on to something new. I'd get distracted by things outside the window. One time in 4th grade Mrs. Miller saw me staring out the window and she asked me what i was thinking about? I told her I was wonder what it would be like to be in outerspace (this was in 1959). She told me I better worry more about getting out of 4th grade. She told my mom about it during parent/teacher conference. My mom would always bring it up and laugh everytime I'd visit her

American Experience on PBS did a documentary on Lobotomies. It was extremely unsettling, but thought provoking at the same time.

Hey, if Yassir Arafat can win a Nobel, that's all you need to know about how worthless the prize is.

Speaking of lobotomies, here's a surprising (to me, at least) bit of trivia: Portuguese physician and neurologist António Egas Moniz won the 1949 Nobel Prize for medicine for developing a lobotomy procedure he called "prefrontal leucotomy". Sort of diminishes my respect for the Nobel Prize.

Remember Rose Kennedy on television doing her public service announcement? We kids thought it was hilarious when she said "I'm the mothah of a retahded chahld." Adults used to tell us that was 'not nice' generally, though some parents would laugh along with the kids and others would be very serious or yell at the kids for making fun.

To us the kids were retards. To teachers they were problem children or 'not working up to potential' or 'won't sit still' or 'deliberately disobedient'. My best friend through most of elementary school would probably be dxd with ADD or something today. He would get up to sharpen his pencil, then get up to throw something in the trash, then he'd have to sharpen his pencil. You never knew what would come first--lunch or the teacher getting annoyed and telling him to cut it out. He never got punished for these lapses as I recall, except being scolded in front of the class and that never seemed to bother him.

A teacher told me that they now use "performance improvement plans" in schools. The kid gets to write it in collaboration with a school staffer, probably the teacher. We had good behavior and bad behavior. Your performance improvement plan and incentive was that you were to do good and avoid doing bad under penalty of [again] staying after school/being sent to the office/having a note sent home(most dreaded)/or getting your behind smacked.

PS I later learnt that while Rose Kennedy's daughter was retarded, she also had a lobotomy to help modulate her emotional extremes. The operation left Rosemary unable to care for herself.
