Lead was used in paint to maintain vibrant colors and to accelerate drying. It was replaced by Japan drier (a blend of Stoddard solvent and cobalt naphthenate); still toxic, but nothing compared to lead.

Ah, those were the days -- when paint was paint. It actually stayed on.
