And Major Edward Bowes came before Ted Mack. It's fun to listen to the way he judged performers verbally on his radio show (he died in 1946). There's about three of his radio programs which can be downloaded for free from a variety of sites online. Anyway, Major Bowes had a gong (like the gong show, only he was the only one who had access to it) and if he didn't like the way an act was going, he gonged it. Listeners would call in votes, just like the shows many years later.

Nothing is original.

One big difference in these two amateur shows (Bowes and Ted Mack) was that the performers could do almost anything they wanted to do.

Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour! It was the forerunner of American Idol.
