My family always enjoyed word games and puzzles, and Jotto was one of our favorite games (along with Boggle, but that was invented in 1972). A blank sheet of paper can, of course, be used in place of the printed score sheet; you just need to write out an eliminating alphabet. But sometimes I play "in my head" without writing anything down. I also like to solve the "cryptoquotes" in the daily newspaper this way.

A couple of funny stories:

- My sister and I, playing against one another, once chose the same secret word: CHAIR.

- When I introduced my wife to the game, the very first secret word she chose was BAKER. I proceeded to employ my usual starting test word, BREAK, thereby identifying all of her letters on my first turn. Despite this setback, she still plays with me occasionally.
