Back in elementary school we had this type of machine to dispense single-serving glass bottles of milk for students who brought their own lunch. We called it "cold lunch" as opposed to "hot lunch" - meaning those who bought the school-prepared lunch. Every morning the teachers would ask who was getting hot lunch that day. She/he could then give a count to the kitchen so the cooks knew how much food to prepare.
