Bakelite was everywhere (or so it seemed) One of the first plastics made from synthetic components (phenol and formaldehyde), It was used for its electrical non-conductivity and heat-resistant properties. It was invented in 1907.

I own a vintage Toastmaster toaster from the early 1960s with bakelite handles. I aquired it about three years ago. I use it a lot and it works beautifully - better than any toaster I've had in the past 25+ years.
Baskelite was invented by Leo Baekeland, a Swedish chemist and Union Carbide acquired the rights to make and market it in the US back at the end of the 1930's.
