My hair is coarse and I picked-it out in the 1970's (I'm a white dude). My friends in Springfield Gardens, Queens, all had Afro-picks in their back pockets. Some of the metal ones were used as weapons !
We sold hundreds of Afro wigs in the shop I worked in back in1968. I would sometimes cut and style about 20 a day right after the welfare checks arrived. Some would buy one in every color we had. The shop was just off Jamaica Avenue and New York Blvd. in Jamaica, NY.

Oops!
This is the link from "Beatle Boots"
I'll stop now. It's probably something like those #2 pencil answer sheets: skip one and every other answer lines up wrong.
