I am a Californian. When I was in the Army I was stationed at a naval base in Virginia where they had Memco, which looked identical to Gemco. And my Gemco card worked there.
When Gemco went out of business you could trade your "lifetime" membership card for a carton of eggs. A few years later, when aforementioned Fedco went out of business, they did the same thing.
Fedmart* was originally a lifetime membership store. It was started by the same man who started Price Club, which still exists overseas as PriceSmart. Of course Fedmart* is long gone.
I remember other lifetime membership stores: F.O.R.E., Unimart, and ABC.
One of the original membership stores. In southern California, there was also Fedco, for local government type employees.
