Actress and singer:Lena Horne wanted the role..but? The heads of MGM wouldn't allow her to play the part..so they gave the part to Ms.Gardner.

Its subject matter of racism and inter-racial relations was quite daring and controversial in the 1950's. However, casting the white Ava Gardner as bi-racial was a bit of cop out. Dorothy Dandridge would have been the perfect choice.
