The Astron Alpha with parachute was $1.25 , the Sprite 75 cents in 1968 ... Sprite had a mylar body and was fun to put too much engine in ... bye bye Sprite boy did it climb ... at first I played by the rules and used the electric igniters but who didn't wind up with a roll of waterproof fuse eventually ?

I also got the catalogs and devoured them, cover to cover... but I only drooled over the rockets, never bought or launched any. My understanding is that Estes-style rocket engines were the power behind the early automobile airbags. Maybe even now, I don't know.

Oh, did you touch a nerve here! My brother and I were in the Estes Aerospace Club in the mid 1970's. We built and launched several rockets - the Rogue, the Big Bertha. We started with the Star Trek starter kit. There was nothing better than to get the new Estes catalog. Estes is still around and my brother and I - both now pushing 50 - are thinking about getting back into it.
