During the '60s and '70s, Eastern Airlines ran an hourly shuttle service between NYC and DC. No reservation or ticket was required, and you could pay your fair in cash onboard. Incredibly, if the plane filled up, they'd roll out another one. I had occasion to use this service once around 1973, evidently on a very busy day. I was on the third plane, by which time they had run out of jets. That Lockheed Electra was the loudest plane I've ever flown on. Its monotonous drone gave me a whopping headache.

While working for Skywest Airlines at Twin Falls Airport in the early 90's, the computer system used for reporting, tracking and communicating with other Airports concerning lost luggage was developed by Eastern Airlines!

I almost had to fly Eastern from Philadephia to Quito, Ecuador. Fortunately, my travel agent found a good deal on Ecuatoriana (another defunct airline) and I only got snubbed by flight attendants between Philly and Miami.
