Never been there, but I went to nearby Long Beach, NJ once, in 2008. It was like stepping back 50 years in time! It seemed like it would have been absolutely no surprise to walk past a place and see Frankie Valli walk out the front door.

Steel Pier claims to still exist, but the real pre-casino Steel Pier was much longer and was not cookie-cutter slick. It had the lady on the diving horse and arcade games and a diving bell and a huge General Motors exhibit, where they showed their latest. It had real vaudeville: dog acts; kid acts; magic tricks; comedy; and few innocent burlesque shticks. I think you'll find that nearly everyone who remembers it would agree that the real Steel Pier is a thing of the past. At the Music Hall Theatre on the pier I first saw in person Brenda Lee and the original Supremes. I think that's where I saw Al Hirt and Dick Clark.
